Ways for SMBs to protect metadata

Monday, March 9, 2009

A website dedicated to trends in the IT security industry has issued some advice for SMBs and larger organizations to protect against cyberattacks that use metadata to breach network security.

One of the main elements to put in place for sensitive data protection is to increase user awareness in the workplace, DarkReading.com reports. Educating employees on how hackers can gain access through Microsoft Word's track changes feature or cracking easy passwords are way to combat against this.

Secondly, policies incorporated with the security education is key as well, stated the news provider. These regulations should address the management issues of metadata and how files should organized and protected on an employee's machine.

Finally, DarkReading says employees need a set of mechanisms to follow and to not allow the user to be solely responsible. Past reports on security research have found the human element is still the number one risk of a security breach for businesses.

SMBs, which are a frequent target of cybercriminals due to smaller organizations having lax security measures in place, may also want to employ the use of email archiving as a way to protect against data loss.ADNFCR-1765-ID-19063893-ADNFCR
